Nintendo Denies Responsibility For Racist and Homophobic Tweets During Their "Cranky Kong Twitter Takeover" Last Thursday

What began as a fun back-and-forth between Nintendo character Cranky Kong and several fans on twitter quickly ended after a series of racist and homophobic slurs last week. The “Cranky Kong Twitter Takeover” as Nintendo called it, began last Thursday to promote the since released Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze to fans on the social network.

At first, Cranky’s tweets were the usual musings we see when celebrities or other employees take over company twitter accounts - jokes promoting the game and even memes poking fun at himself and the video game industry. The eldest Kong even showed his ageless charm and wit by playfully calling out Game Informer for saying the game was too hard, tweeting “[I’m] Old enough to remember when falling in a pit in a platformer was called “lack of skill” and not “cheap. #DKCTF #WiiU”. All-in-all the promotion seemed to be going well. It was not until Cranky received a question about the idea of gay marriage that he went off.

“Back in my day it was Donkey and Eve, not Donkey and Steve #DKCTF #itsinthebible,” he said his first tweet, which was quickly followed by others such as, “How does that even work with you whippersnappers? You better keep my bananas away from your fucking assholes. #DKCTF #1man1woman” and “If humans evolved from apes then why do I exist? Ape Jesus - 1, ‘Science’ - 0. #DKCTF #suckmyhairyassdarwin.” At this point fans started to turn against the idea of the twitter takeover, with several followers even demanding Nintendo stop the promotion.

“And another thing.” Cranky continued after a half-minute twitter silence, “Blacks. I didn’t fight in fucking Kong War 2 to have you pricks wear your pants around your knees. Learn some respect before I crack you with this cane. #DKCTF #sorrynotsorry #nickiminaj”.

While the majority of the feedback has been negative, many Cranky Kong fans have come to his defense, telling Texture Pop Gaming to go easy on him due to his age. “He’s not a bad ape, he doesn’t know what he’s saying,” one anonymous fan told us, “He just comes from a different era that’s all. And we’re pretty sure he has dementia.”

Throughout the whole ordeal and drama that followed, Nintendo of America has maintained it’s innocence and refused to remove the tweets, stating “We would like to reiterate that Nintendo does not condone or agree with anything said in tweets or interviews by Cranky Kong or any other of it’s employees.” When pressed further regarding the fact that these are indeed made up cartoon characters Nintendo responded by having us escorted off the premises and giving us a free Wii U and copy of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
