Artist recreation of "lore burning" |
It was a controversial enough move when Zenimax announced they would be charging $15 per month for their upcoming MMO The Elder Scrolls: Online instead of the free-to-play model currently popular in the genre, but with their more recent announcement yesterday, they are shaking up the payment world again by allowing potential players to forgo the monetary payment by way of burning a piece of Elder Scrolls lore.
According to a recent blog post by the developer, players may burn anything related to lore of the series' past. Whether it's the official strategy guide for Morrowind, a map of Cyrodill, one of the recent Elder Scrolls books published, or even that super accurate Khajiit cosplay you made. Anything is fair game as long as it has something to do with the lore of The Elder Scrolls.
"We've been metaphorically torching the lore of the series for so long that we think it'd be fun to see it physically burning," the blog post said, "once we run out of miscellaneous things to burn, we may just end the game altogether, but we'll cross that bridge once we get to it." To submit their history-destroying payment, players will simply have to email a recording of them doing so. Referral bonuses will also be given if a friend in the recording is being lit on fire while wearing any kind of Elder Scrolls apparel.
