Following an email from Wisconsin teen Randy Morris, the NFL has announced that Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons has been suspended for four games effect at the start of the 2014 season. The letter, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, detailed the dirty hit that Timmons put on a Denver Broncos running back in Madden 25 for the PlayStation 3, resulting in his in-game suspension.
“It was clearly a helmet-to-helmet hit,” said Goodell in a conference announcing the suspension, “we can’t have those kinds of hits tolerated in our video game franchise, it’ll send a bad message that our sport is violent. Lawrence should know better.” The grainy off-screen recording of the hit that was sent to the commissioner’s office was shown at the press conference, drawing audible gasps from the crowd at the brutality.
“Did you see how hard he hit him?” one football fan who saw the video commented, “It was so hard that he glitched halfway through the running back’s body, I’m surprised his spine is even attached. That can’t be allowed in the NFL and I’m glad the son-of-a-bitch was suspended.” Reactions from fans around the country have also been similar, with many fans calling for Timmons to suspended longer, or even banned from the league entirely.
The accused linebacker released a statement voicing regret for his actions and acceptance of the suspension. “I don’t want to cause any more trouble for the NFL, I understand the hit was out-of-line and if I could go back in time and stop the player with the controller from doing it, I definitely would.” Timmons has declined other offers for interviews, stating that he needs some time with his family to work through this difficult time.
The Steelers themselves are also reportedly disappointed in their star player, stating that they may extend the suspension following the NFL’s investigation and that this kind of dirty playing is not acceptable on the Steelers.
